Using the scan tool

Three ways to scan during a count — a handheld scanner, your device camera, or manual lookup — so you can count anywhere in the store.

The scan tool is how you record counts during a reconciliation — look a product up, confirm it's the right one, and log what's on the shelf. It works three ways so you can count wherever you are in the store.

Three ways to scan

External scanner

Plug in a handheld barcode scanner and scan away — each scan is recorded instantly. Best for counting through a lot of items quickly.

Camera

Use your phone or tablet's camera as a scanner, with an on-screen viewfinder. No extra hardware — good for counting out on the floor.

Manual

Search by product name or type a barcode. For items without a scannable code, or when you'd rather look something up by hand.

As you scan

Each scan matches the barcode to a product and logs a count against it. The running totals at the top — Total, Matches, Differences, New — update live, so you always know how the count is going and whether the shelf agrees with the system.

If you scan something that isn't in your catalog yet, it shows up as new — a real item on your shelf that needs a product created. You can handle it right from the count.

The scan target the tool matches against is each product's canonical barcode — the one identity Tangerine Star treats as authoritative — not just any code that's ever been on the item. That's what keeps a scan from matching the wrong product. See Identifying reorders & duplicate UPCs.
The same scanning works for a quick lookup, not just a full count — scan an item to pull up what it is, what it costs, and how many you should have.
Scanning happens inside a reconciliation session — see Reconcile inventory for the full flow.
